Assemble’s FY21 ESG Impact Report highlights our approach to Affordable Housing—where we achieve our greatest impact—and summarises our work over the past year in environmental performance, social impact and good governance.
The team has recently worked on defining our housing agenda and clarifying how the three core housing portfolios support this ambition. Given our ESG approach is housing-led (underpinned by environmental performance and financial wellbeing), we thought it vital to include when talking about our impact.
We have also charted our priorities for the year ahead to ensure our growing team of 45 remain on track to achieve our ambitious ESG targets as we scale to achieve real impact in the housing sector.
“Now more than ever, it is critical for us to advance the UN Sustainable Development Goals and commit to reducing carbon emissions to stop global warming above 1.5 degrees,” said Ms Telfer.
Key ESG themes guide our work, as do seven of the seventeen United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDG). Themes include: Affordability, Environmental Performance, Financial Wellbeing, Caring for Communities, Design Excellence, Gender Equality, and Employee Engagement.
The following initiatives were achieved or significantly advanced over the past year:
- Announcing a partnership with community housing provider, Housing Choices Australia to ensure all social and affordable BTR projects will include a minimum of 20% social housing, with five sites (seven projects in total) in the first tranche.
- Launching a Key Worker Program at 393 Macaulay Rd, Kensington project with 20% rental concessions offered across seven apartments.
- Significant waste minimisation strategies, with 90% of construction waste at 393 Macaulay Rd, Kensington being recycled and diverted from landfill (with a target of 95%).
- Partnering with Closed Loop, supplier of bio composters, which is confirmed for all Assemble sites to minimise food waste (from both commercial and residential tenancies).
- Our Board of Directors has achieved the 40:40:20 commitment, with two women and three men (40% and 60% respectively). We currently employ 23 women and 22 men (51% and 49% respectively).
- Assemble has submitted its B-Corporation certification application and is a member of the Green Building Council of Australia.
