Fresh from unpacking boxes, we caught up with Talia from 15 Thompson Street. We spoke about her new home, and how our purchase pathway has made her more open-minded to the possibility of home ownership.
Talia: I work with a US-based reforestation NGO called One Tree Planted. My role is Head of Impact, focusing on nature-based carbon projects. I’m responsible for monitoring and assessing the impact of our projects, which includes looking at carbon, biodiversity, socioeconomic factors, and community involvement.
It’s so rewarding to contribute to reforesting the world and ensuring we all have a better future.
T: I was living in an apartment in Footscray with great views over the Westgate. But unfortunately, the landlord wanted to raise my rent by over a hundred dollars a week. Also, the apartment itself was beautiful, but everything outside it felt lifeless — long, dull hallways with no sense of community. It never really felt like home.
Looking at other rentals was frustrating — with overcrowded inspections and low-quality rental properties. I didn’t want to keep throwing money at just another rental; I wanted something more meaningful.
T: The security and stability offered by the purchase pathway was incredibly appealing. Owning a home was never something I thought I’d be able to do — I always considered myself as a renter. When I came across the purchase pathway, it felt like a perfect solution. From the moment I moved in, I was thinking – “this could be mine” and I now have the space and stability to work towards those savings goals. Knowing that my rent and purchase price is locked in for up to five years also gives me peace of mind.
Having that opportunity changes how I approach living here — I feel a real sense of ownership and community, like we’re all invested in making this place our home
T:It’s so special and rare to be able to move into a brand-new apartment. Moving into such a well-designed and sustainable home allows me to really live what I believe in. Gas-free living and being able to access 100% GreenPower© through AssembleConnect really makes my heart happy. As someone who doesn’t drive, I really appreciate the bike-friendly shared spaces like the workshop and bike parking.
With the open-aired breezeways, the thermal performance of the building is impressive. I hardly need the heater, even on cold days. My home is also very quiet— I've woken up a few times not knowing what time it is!
T: I’m eager to explore Kensington more. It feels like there is a strong existing community here. With beloved spots like La Tortilleria just round the corner — it’s shaping up to be a fun place to live.
We’ll send you the floorplans you’re looking for, invite you in to experience our projects firsthand, and let you know when new projects are released.
