Our vision

Homes for change

At Assemble, we’re building a future where more Australians can access and live in sustainable, affordable and well-designed homes and neighbourhoods. We’ve made it our mission to design new ideas for a better, fairer housing system – one that cares for the people and places within it.

Our story

Advocating for positive housing futures

Founded in 2010, we began by advocating for new ideas about the future of housing through our publication, Assemble Papers.

In 2016, delivering high-quality apartments that respect people, place and planet became more than something we wrote about. We completed our first project at 122 Roseneath Street, Clifton Hill, selling homes off the plan. Roseneath Street brought our ethos to life; a building designed to reduce environmental impact and support community connection, to contribute positively to its residents’ lives.

Our supportive pathway to home ownership

Since then, we continue to focus on delivering high-quality, thoughtfully designed apartments, and we’ve introduced innovative ways to support people to purchase them.

In 2018 we launched our first project designed with our supportive purchase pathway at 38 Albermarle Street in Kensington. By fixing the rent and purchase price of our apartments for up to five years, we're helping people to experience life in their homes as they prepare to buy them - without the housing market racing away from them.

In 2020, AustralianSuper, Australia’s largest industry superfund, took a cornerstone share in our business, and committed to investing in the next five projects delivered with this supportive purchase pathway.

AustralianSuper is backing our projects because we’re creating an exemplary resident experience that connects people with place. Our designs support community to grow within our projects, and out into existing neighbourhoods. Through this, we will generate a sustainable return on investment for AustralianSuper who in turn have a responsibility to support their members into retirement.

Together, we are building 1000+ apartments in Melbourne’s inner suburbs by 2027, starting with 15 Thompson Street in Kensington.

Opening the door to stable long-term rentals

We know the Australian housing market needs innovation beyond home ownership. So, we’re also building rental housing, where residents can put down roots in the community and stay for as long as they like. We’ve partnered with Super Housing Partnerships, HESTA and Housing Choices Australia to develop and manage social, affordable, market and Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) apartments. Our first project, 402 Macaulay Road in Kensington, is due for completion in 2025.

At Assemble, we’ll continue to push ourselves to re-imagine access to good design through our different purchase or rental pathways – so good design can play a positive role in more people’s lives.
